Device Compatibility #
GoodMaps Indoor Navigation requires:
- Either ARKit (iOS devices) or ARCore (Android devices).
- For iPhones, the app works with iPhone 8 and above.
- For Android devices, compatibility depends on the manufacturer. It’s not just about the age of the device – make sure your Android device is updated.
Tip: Check the GoodMaps website for an Android compatibility checker to confirm your device is supported.
Localization #
- For best results, stand still facing an open space (not a wall) and slowly pan your phone left and right at mid-torso level, as if taking a panoramic photo.
- Avoid moving too quickly; blurry frames slow down localization.
- Keep the phone level – don’t wave it around or hold it overhead.
- The app will clearly indicate when localization is successful.
Tip: Confident users can start walking slowly while localizing, either gently panning or pointing the phone forward. The more visually distinct features the camera sees, the faster localization will complete.
Though, don’t run or walk too quickly while localizing, as this can cause blurry frames. Once localized, you can move at your preferred pace.
Routing Styles and User Experience #
- After localizing, you can hold your phone in different positions:
- “Texting position” (slightly tilted, not fully upright): Shows AR view at the top of the screen and a small map at the bottom. This is more comfortable and less conspicuous.
- Flat position: The AR view disappears and a full-screen map is displayed – useful for a clearer view of your route.
- Raising or lowering your phone automatically switch between these views.
- When using elevators, escalators, or stairs (level transitions), you’ll be prompted to lower your phone flat. After the transition, raise your phone upright for a few seconds to confirm your new location.
Tip: After a level transition, walk a few steps away from the transition point before resuming navigation. This helps with both safety and positioning.
The app will prompt you to either pan to localize or tap a button to confirm your transition. Holding the phone upright for a few seconds after a transition is required for accurate tracking.
Destinations #
- Start a route by tapping a Point of Interest (POI) on the map or by using the search feature.
- Search supports additional tags such as “HEX,” “Subway,” and “Elizabeth Line.”
- The Directory tab lists all available POIs.
- Once localized, the Directory sorts POIs by distance from your current location, making it easy to find the nearest destination.
Routing Options #
- Routes can be set to “Walking” or “Step-Free” modes:
- Walking: Uses all types of level transitions – stairs, ramps, escalators, etc.
- Step-Free: Uses only ramps and elevators.
Tip: Choosing “Walking” does not exclude elevators or ramps.
You can ignore suggested routes at any time; the app will dynamically recalculate based on your choices. For example, if you prefer to use an escalator instead of an elevator, simply do so – the app will adapt.
Remember, you can customize your journey as needed.
