Approach, Methodology, and User Guidance #
GoodMaps delivers AI-powered indoor navigation for blind and low-vision users, leveraging precise LiDAR mapping and camera-based positioning. This technology enhances independence and confidence, but is designed to supplement – not replace – essential Orientation & Mobility (O&M) skills and professional assistance.
Core Safety Framework #
Essential Prerequisites #
- O&M Training: We recommend that users complete professional Orientation & Mobility training before using GoodMaps. The app is a supplemental tool and should never replace fundamental mobility skills or primary mobility aids, such as canes or guide dogs.
- Complementary Service: GoodMaps works alongside traditional passenger assistance, offering independent navigation options. If you ever feel uncertain or concerned at any point, we suggest seeking human support.
Device and User Requirements #
- Modern Smartphone: Use a supported iOS or Android device with an up-to-date operating system and a functioning camera.
- Camera Access: Enable camera permissions in device settings to support location identification and augmented reality features.
- Internet Connectivity: A stable internet connection is required for real-time routing and map updates.
- Camera-Based Navigation: Users must be able to hold the phone up to identify their location and receive navigation assistance during routing.
Safety Protocols #
Built-In Protections #
- Mandatory Terms Acceptance: Users must review and accept safety terms before first use.
- Platform Warnings: The app issues alerts for railway platforms and other high-risk areas.
- Real-Time Announcements: Audible safety notifications are provided by the app based on your position.
User Responsibilities #
- Always use your primary mobility aids (such as canes or guide dogs).
- Maintain environmental awareness, which may include using bone-conducting headphones or other assistive devices.
- Assess your own O&M skills and confidence before relying on digital navigation.
- If you are ever uncertain or disoriented, stop and seek human assistance.
Implementation Guidelines #
For Users #
- Safety First: If you are uncertain about navigation, stop and seek human assistance.
- Battery Backup: Carry a portable power source, and inform others of your travel plans.
- Environmental Assessment: Use your O&M skills to evaluate surroundings if you become disoriented.
For Venues #
- Accurate Mapping: Ensure thorough LiDAR scanning, and address potential navigation hazards.
- Regular Updates: Maintain current point-of-interest data via GoodMaps Studio.
- Staff Training: Educate staff about the technology’s capabilities and limitations.
When to Seek Help #
If you become lost or disoriented:
- Stop moving, and use your primary O&M skills to assess your environment.
- Request passenger assistance, contact venue staff, or use integrated services such as Be My Eyes, for additional support.
